Dolly Parton was the mother of country music in so many ways. She created songs that will continue to inspire Nashville -- and generations of musicians -- for as long as people pick up a guitar and tell a story. It is not too heavy to call her a genius.

But what I’ll remember most is the grace, wit, kindness and levity she brought with her. In my touring days, I had the privilege of working alongside many of the musicians, road crew and technicians who had also spent time on the road with Dolly. And not once -- not ONE time -- in all those years did I ever hear a story about Dolly that wasn’t a good one. That says something.

I’m so grateful to my students for letting me turn our class last night into a little Dolly tribute. We played her songs, celebrated her writing, and reminded ourselves why her music will never leave us.

Thank you, Dolly, for giving Nashville -- and the world -- so much music, laughter, heart and grace. ❤️

A post here is long overdue to celebrate STAR STUDENT Helene Cronin! Helene is a singer-songwriter who speaks to the human condition without cliches and asks the big questions without preaching -- plus she is the loveliest & kindest person you'll ever meet.

So Helene's many friends & fans are over the moon for her since she scored a cut on the latest album by one of the hottest acts in country music, Ella Langley!!!

Co-written with Joybeth Taylor, "Speaking Terms" explores deep themes in an intimately personal voice. Don't you just love it when good things happen to good people?

I love this 2004 mega-hit by Hoobastank. A stadium rock anthem, it also works great stripped down to just acoustic guitar.

Sure, you can google the chords (the record is in the key of E), but it can also be played in D with capo on 2nd fret -- and this number chart will work for both, or any other key for that matter. (Just another reason why 😊)

And our song Alex King spotted this perfect companion to the chart -- thanks, boychik :)

Here’s to all the wonderful fathers who love and care for their children, including my husband Bobby King, our son Alex, and of course my father, Philadelphia folksinger George Britton (1917 - 2010).

My dad taught thousands of guitar students, and I recently reconnected with Ira Packman, now a retired doctor, who took lessons as a child.

Ira sent me a copy of his long-ago songbook, a treasury of simple folk songs — see the chords written in Roman numerals?

That’s where my love of the number system began.

My father’s celebration of life back in 2010 overflowed with music sung by his children, grandchildren, friends, students, and colleagues, but when Ira performed this two-chord beauty, time stood still.

Thank you, my friend ♥️
