Just like most things in life, the skills you need to sing should start small and grow.🤓

Think of a lip trill (like in these videos)...

Identify the issue/deficiency, start small, and grow. And then, just like this student, you’ll be able to sing an entire phrase on a lip trill.

(Also related, but not the student in this post....I had a student in her 80s who never learned to do a lip trill. She came in for a lesson, and said:

S: Megan, guess what I learned.
M: (intrigued) What?
S: I know how to lip trill now.
M: Whaaa? That’s awesome! Show me.
S: (proceeds to lip trill through one of her favorite spirituals)
M: That’s awesome! What happened?!
S: I just committed every day to practice a lip trill since our last lesson (which was a week prior). And now I can do it!

Do YOU have this commitment?

This is your pelvic floor (diaphragm).⬆️

It’s super crucial in good singing.

In fact, the pelvic diaphragm is in every vocal ped text from the 19th century I’ve read; but it goes away during the 20th century (I have theories about this, for another time). The pelvic diaphragm has seen a resurgence in emphasis in vocal science in the last 20ish years.🤓🧐

If you can’t hit high notes or get your breath support moving, it may be due to a weak pelvic diaphragm.

In order to strengthen, simply squat just a bit and then sing.

Be sure to keep your hips tucked underneath; don’t let them fall out behind you (this is not a Beyoncé dance number). 💪😜

If this is new for you, it will feel like physical activity, that’s because it is. Singing is a physical activity, it feels like work sometimes.

Let me know if you have questions AND how it goes!

From outdated family space to new & refreshed (and almost-ready) studio space….

I cannot tell you how excited I am to start teaching in this room.

…and to think of all the wildflower bouquets that will fill those windows this summer❤️❤️💐

We’d still be in the teardown phase if it weren’t for my dad. He is never intimidated by a big job.

Fight the holiday hoarseness with this simple tool.

Humming is challenging with a tired a voice, so if it doesn't work at first, be even gentler in volume (even if it cracks).

Your voice is just muscles; you are a vocal athlete! 💪🏼

The easiest way to prevent vocal fatigue is through warming up, so the muscles of your voice have the chance to warm up, stretch out, and bulk up for singing.
