A little behind the scenes of the property here at Experience Onsite

03/29/2023

We stand with our Nashville community in support and love for our friends and neighbors who are suffering from the horrific events which took place at the Covenant school. As we pause and reflect to pay tribute, we share some thoughts and reflections on how we might leave space for everyone to process their grief and show up in their humanity so we can create lasting change together.

I invite all who've been part of the Onsite story to join me in a moment of silence following this message. Onsite's heart currently sits at half-mast in honor of our dear friend and colleague Bill Lokey. Bill's kind spirit transitioned to his new home on the morning of 3/17, but his legacy at Onsite and beyond will shine on. Bill committed his life to be of service and was a lighthouse for everyone he encountered. He lit the way to safety and healing for almost everyone who crossed his path.

All people mattered to Bill but none more than his loving wife Laurie and his exceptional family. He was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather who often said his most important role was being there for them. His cheesy wit, warm head nod, inviting grin, prankster antics, kind nature, and loving heart will forever be revered. We thank you, Bill Lokey, for your foundational service to the Onsite mission. We reflect, we mourn, we honor, we love, and we carry forward. Forward down humanity's path, embracing stories and healing hearts, just as you encouraged us to do at the end of mine and your final conversation a few days before you signed off. As we move forward, nourishing the souls of those seeking restoration and healing, we pause to thank Bill for helping pave the way by shining his light upon this sacred work so the path to healing can continue to be available for generations to come.

Bill served as the Clinical Director for Onsite for over a decade. As revealed at his celebration of life, Onsite has plans for a future sanctuary for our clinicians, who Bill often referred to as the heartbeat of Onsite, that will lovingly be called Bill's Place.

Please join me in a moment of silence for our friend Bill. We love you all and thank you for continuing to shine the Onsite flame, especially in times like these.

I'll close with a few of Bill's favorite words from The Journey Home guided meditation:

"I'd like to take you on a journey, a journey home, not the home you were raised in, but the home you have longed for, a place of love and peace. A place of acceptance and longing fulfilled."

Welcome, home, Bill!

{Part 1} It can be challenging to ask for help when stressed, struggling, or feeling stuck. Over the years, I’ve been on the receiving end of numerous inquiries in search of support and often desperate for direction. It’s an honor to be trusted with these delicate, often intricate conversations, but sometimes it can feel intimidating. The stakes appear high, and our response can feel crucial when helping guide others toward positive change. I continue to learn from moments like these and, over the years, have discovered a few things that can be helpful and effective within the process. A friend prompted this series last week by asking if I could share some ideas. After a brief exchange, she encouraged me to share some with you as well in hopes they may be helpful when others lean on you for support. Here are a few quick off-the-cuff thoughts—part 1 of a 5.

I hope these sweet little moments one day feel as significant to her as they do now to me. I recognize more every day that the most treasured assets are not those which carry monetary value but those which provide meaningful memories. The more time, presence, and connection invested into relationships that matter, the more prosperous and well-off we become. It’s not easy to balance it all, and on days when I feel distant and flooded with responsibility, I pause and look back at memories like this and remind myself what really matters.

On a recent trip, I got home and got a surprising card from my son. Here’s what I learned.

Mental breaks replenish overconsumption fatigues. Inactivity is not an indulgence; it's necessary to create and maintain a sense of self. Less stress = more peace of mind.

There is nothing wrong with being admired, but don’t mistake it for being loved. We are not what others perceive of us. Our value is rooted in our humanness, not our accomplishments.

People who feel cared for are more impactful at caring for others. This theory has proven true in my experience but can be challenging to integrate, especially in times of adversity, change, or transition.

So how do we build and contribute to ecosystems that support and care for those they employ? I’ve been obsessed with healthy work culture for years. Although I believe it’s essential and possible, I don’t think the ingredients for wholehearted empathetic team members is birthed from organizational health. It’s an integral part of the equation, but feeling cared for must also be present outside work to receive and sustain energy from supporting others instead of exhaustion.

Being burned out is not always a sign that you need rest or a professional change. It’s often a deficit of connection outside work that influences our ability to collaborate while on the job. Many of us are asking hard questions in this season about the passion, meaning, and value behind our professions. The most important question, however, may be not what’s missing from work but what may be missing in life.

The changes we seek around our external circumstances are a good invitation first to explore our inner well-being.

One of the best things we can do for our colleagues is to check-in and encourage them to have life outside work.

Meet Slingshot. He’s our newest addition to . We’ve got a lot of exciting things happening out here in addition to it being our beautiful west coast home for ! We are building up our heard for more trail riding opportunities and equine experiences for both Oaks and Onsite guests. He and I did our first trail ride last week into the foothills of Ballena Valley. It’s one of the prettiest places I’ve ever ridden, and we can’t wait for you to experience it. I hope you can join us sometime and experience the magic of this special place.

“Nice to meet you.”

A kid's mind feels so timeless and pure. We spend our developmental years racing to get out of them and the rest of our lives trying to get back to them. Sundays can be complicated for some of us who grew up with an unwavering set of rules for how to do life and spirituality. At times prayer and faith have been just that for me; complicated. Then moments like a Sunday morning tea party with our two-year-old brings everything back into focus, and I settle into just how simple it all is. When we turn down comparison, judgment, and shame noise, we can get back to loving ourselves, others, and even those we disagree with without condition. I hope to pursue life and faith the way I pursue my family; excited to meet them every morning and can’t wait to say I love you at the end of each day. Thankful to my little angel for the sweet reminder and beautiful prayer. So many of these moments brighten my day, and I hope to share this one might do the same for you. Happy Sunday, nice to meet you, and I love y’all ;)
