Respectfully submitted on behalf of Hanshi Robert Scaglione,
Onegai-shimasu, Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei and all USRKUSA Deshi,

Almost 60 students from Dojos in Florida, New York, Tennessee, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia and Israel convened Friday night at Ueshiro Viera Karate Dojo in a workout led by Kyoshi Seeger, Ku-Dan and Shihan of Ueshiro Pine Forest School in Palisades.

Kyoshi Seeger and Hanshi Scaglione, Ju-Dan and Shihan of Ueshiro Viera Karate Dojo, encouraged us to polish our moves. Step first.

We worked warm-ups, multiple repetitions of Kata Fukyugata San, Rohai, foundation and Yakosoku Kumite Sho.

We were reminded that we have resources, books, videos, email and apps to help supplement our training.

For example, think about the Commitment paragraph submitted by Sempai James Moskie, Ni-kyu, Ueshiro Midtown Karate Dojo, (Nov. 7, 2023): Do you truly “know” and understand the kata or do you just know the moves of the kata?

Reread the TOTW by Sensei Emiliano Mazlen, Go-dan and Shihan, Boston Chinatown Ueshiro Shorin-ryu Karate Club (July 23, 2023): “Stepping first before throwing the technique means getting the complete foundation in place first.”

More phrases to absorb and pass on:
• “Flex your fingers” or fix your shuto hand
• knees behind the toes
• tuck the tailbone under
• 2-second pauses in the neck exercises
• breathe
• Kime (or focus)

We think we know these things, but we still have to work on them. After all, karate is a lifelong marathon.

“If you’re trying, you’re winning.”

Respectfully submitted on behalf of Hanshi Robert Scaglione,

Sensei Jennifer Sangalang

On September 21, 2019, exactly 57 years after Ansei Ueshiro arrived in the United States and 55 years after Choshin Chibana erected the Anko Itosu Memorial in Mawashi, Okinawa, the Ueshiro Viera Dojo hosted Sensei David Tamir, 7th Dan, Denshi Shihan of the Nev Dojo in Israel. He conducted a seminar; "the application of our kata via visualization", as described in the Green book. Hanshi Robert Scaglione and several FL Dan and Ikkyu members assisted SenseiTamir.
Over 35 USRKUSA FL members were in attendance. Sensei Tamir stated "One must visualize how karate techniques devastate an opponent. A punch or block does not stop at, but travels straight through, the opponent. A block or strike must destroy an opponent."
Sensei Tamir demonstrated strikes and blocks of the first three kata with the Black belt and Ikkyu members attacking him. Critical close contact and actual contact were slowly emphasized with multiple attackers from all angles.

At times kata is performed with the focus on "mushin"–no thought. One may practice kata at slow motion, snap, speed or full power. Focus on your breath to allow the kata to flow with mushin. All the participants in attendance practiced and performed the kata many times using visualization and mushin alternately.

Karate, visualization and kata practice are not to win tournament trophies. Karate is about Body, Mind and Spirit. We practice karate ideally striving to train six days a week in a dojo as demonstrated by Gichen Funakoshi's excellent example of lifetime commitment, to stay fit physically and mentally, to be free of any illnesses, diseases, depression, headaches or stomach aches, to be injury free, and if necessary to protect our life or anyone's life from would be assassins, without striking a blow. One day a week karate practice reaps no benefits.

The philosophy of service to others and of "no first attack in karate" are 2500 years old Confucian precepts handed down by Soken Bushi Matsumura and described by Gichen Funokoshi in his four books, by Shoshin Nagamine in his two books, and by Master Ansei Ueshiro via his teachings. The books give detailed examples of winning battles without striking a blow i.e- Funakoshi on many occasions, -Anko Itosu in many descriptions, also of Soken Bushi Matsumura, and- Kosaku Bushi Matsumora. There are numerous examples of virtue in the books. Research this well.

Thank you all for your continued participation!

"Keep training!"

Sincerely,

Hanshi Robert Scaglione.

"....no matter how you excel in the art of 'te, ...nothing is more important than your behavior...as observed in daily life!"

Greetings All USRKUSA Members.

"Rank is as much a responsibility as it is a privilege!"

It is mandatory that all members attend their dojo tests.
Responsibility and privilege are synonymous with each other.
"Keep training!"

Sincerely, Hanshi Robert Scaglione.
