Common Ground had the honor last week of inviting local author Andrew Maraniss to speak to our group. He is best known for his book, "Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the collision of race and sports in the south", depicting Perry Wallace, the first African-American to play college basketball under an athletic scholarship in the Southeastern Conference in the 1960s.
The adapted version for children of this first book was made into a play at the Nashville Children’s Theatre just last year.
He has since written 7 additional books relating athletics and social justice, for kids through adults. It was an honor to hear from him and he provided fantastic info on what it means to be an author, and how to use writing for furthering equity and justice in the world.
If you’d like to check out his work, you can find them in most book stores, as well as online.

I know we are all feeling a tremendous amount of sadness, and for many of us, an ever increasing sense of fear and uneasiness in local community spaces.
We want to assure all of you that our co-op remains steadfast in our goal of making a safe, inclusive, secular, diverse, and loving space for those we share values with.
The next 4 years (and beyond) are no doubt going to be challenging for all of us, but our hope is that your family can find joy and safety in this little community of ours. Now more than ever, especially in our deeply red state, we have to lean on each other and “do the work” in whatever capacity we’re able.

🍎 As we approach Fall Break this week we wanted to share a glimpse at all the FUN we've had so far this school year! We started this semester with our annual Field Day and it may have been one of our best yet. There were egg races, shaving cream messes, and lots of water games.
Our first 6 week block has been dedicated to learning about Animals That Fly. We had a guest speaker from the Audubon Society come out to talk to us about Birding and showed us how to use the Merlin app.
We even had a visit from the Nashville Zoo who brought out some very special animal guests and talked to the kids about prey animals.
If you'd like to be part of the fun next year, be sure to visit our website and fill out the Contact Us form to be placed on the waiting list. We can't wait to meet you! https://commongroundnashville.wordpress.com/
