What can we say… our horns are pretty multi-talented 😏
This week in Orchestra Holden had the opportunity to conduct Dvorak’s 8th Symphony, movement 1 as part of his private conducting lessons with Dr Fashun. This is such a cool opportunity because it’s one thing to practice individually, but to actually go up in front of your peers and lead them is so much more intimidating and really puts your practice to the test . It’s also not something college students get to do all that often, which makes this even cooler! Congrats to Holden and his conducting!

Annual National Horn day!
This week in seminar we had a blast further exploring the techniques of Natural Horn and how they apply to musical works such as duets (as heard here) and pieces such as Saint-Saën’s Romance.
What is Natural Horn you may ask? WELL,
The French horn evolved from hunting horns in the 17th century, with the natural horn—a valveless instrument—dominating until valves were invented in the early 19th century.
Learning natural horn remains essential for modern hornists! Since players must produce all chromatic notes through hand-stopping and embouchure control alone, mastering natural horn creates precise pitch awareness, strengthens embouchure, and cultivates pure tone quality. It also provides historical insight into Baroque and Classical repertoire by composers like Mozart and Beethoven, who wrote specifically for the natural horn’s unique capabilities. This connection to the instrument’s roots makes modern hornists more complete, technically secure musicians.
