WELCOME - This summer program is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program.

The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) brings ten students each summer to campus to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering. Participation in the program provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineer

Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering is waiving its application fee requirement for Ph.D. admission in Summer/Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Also note that GRE scores are not required for these programs. ‘We seek the best and brightest to join our Ph.D. programs and never want applicants to be deterred from exploring Vanderbilt because of financial barriers,’ says Dean Krishnendu Roy. Congratulations to Lauren Hubert, who got first place in her division at the AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers 2022 undergraduate poster session! Lauren completed her National Science Foundation (NSF) research experience for undergraduates at Vanderbilt University this summer in John Tanner Wilson's lab, with mentors Blaise Kimmel and Payton Stone. We're thrilled to see her present the research she spent the summer working on.

Congratulations, Lauren!

The Vanderbilt Nanoscience REU program culminates in a poster session, where the REUs present on everything they've researched during their ten weeks at Vanderbilt. Check out some photos from this summer's poster session below!

Don't forget that the application for 2023 opens this Saturday!

The application for the 2023 Vanderbilt Nanoscience REU program goes live this Saturday! The students selected for the REU program spend ten weeks doing research with Vanderbilt faculty and graduate student mentors. There are over 30 projects available for students to apply to, which gives increased flexibility to match the research to student interests.

Check out details about the available projects at vu.edu/vinse-reu!

Research Experience for Undergraduates The Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) is a University institute focused on new science and technology based on nanoscale materials.

The application for the 2023 Vanderbilt Nanoscience REU program goes live on October 1st! In order to give applicants a taste of what's ahead, we're going to be sharing some of our favorite things about the REU program over the course of the next week.

We try to schedule a social event hosted by an REU faculty member every week; this gives our REUs a chance to meet mentors other than their own in a more relaxed setting. The 2022 summer had a busy social calendar with two picnics, a trip to Mammoth Cave, tickets to the Nashville Sounds, a canoe excursion, and several meals at local restaurants.

Check out the page next Monday for more insight into the Vanderbilt Nanoscience REU program, and mark your calendar for October 1st!

Meet our National Science Foundation (NSF) REU Summer Interns! The Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) REU program is a ten week summer internship for undergraduates that provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience. Out of 850 applicants, eleven were chosen to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering.

Emily Martinez is a materials science and engineering undergraduate at the University of Central Florida. For her Vanderbilt University research experience she has been placed in Kane Jennings's lab alongside graduate student mentor Marc Nabhan. "I chose the VINSE REU program because I was truly fascinated by the research topics available to me," Emily said. "This gave me the best opportunity to learn more about materials science and chemical engineering while also having a true interest in my research." Emily is excited about working in a laboratory setting with materials science, and plans to use the skills she learns during the REU experience to help her apply to graduate school and have a successful career.

Trey Theobald is a biochemistry and pre-medicine undergraduate at Ohio Wesleyan University. For his Vanderbilt University research experience he has been placed in Ethan Lippmann's lab alongside graduate student mentor Andrew Kjar, which was a natural fit. "I selected the VINSE REU Summer Intern program because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program," Trey said. "I had a desire to work with one of the many projects with biomedical applications." Trey is excited for the opportunity to participate in research done in a cutting-edge facility, and to have mentors that will guide him in shaping his personal scientific goals into a more defined career path.
