There is something primal about the knowledge that you can physically defend yourself. It changes the way you carry yourself, think and feel about things, and respond to the world around you. That something is Empowerment.

This is who I am.

I am She/Her/ Them. Ella/Elle. I am a Venezuelan-Cuban-Spanish--Basque-French U.S. Citizen. I am educated. I am Gender Q***r. I am a Leader. I am a Bridge. I am a connector. I am a Healer. I am a Leader. I am a safe space creator and holder. And I am Human.

I hold safe space for mistakes from others, and safe space for myself to process my own mistakes.

I am a space for my personal growth. And I hold space for discomfort, so others may grow, safely around me.

I am, still, only human.

I am NO ONE'S pet project. No One's claim to salvage. I am NO ONE'S Black Sheep. I am No One's White Savior Projects or Barbarian to Tame.

I. Am. Me.
I. Am. Free.
I. Need. No. Colonialist. Guidance.
And, while I may be 80% Spanish, Basque, and French, I am also
20% Indigenous South American and Northwestern and Western African.

I am Gender Q***r and have been so since before there was a word for it.

My pronouns may now be She/ Her/ They, but the truth is the no one word can define all of what I am, so it doesn't matter.

I may now be a US Citizen, but I am no less the lands that ALL of my ancestors came from.

My name is Lissette and for 50 years I have accommodated your need to call me Liz, because it is familiar to you. But that is NOT MY NAME.

And it is time that YOU make an attempt to know ME... And for me to stop, after 50 years, to make it easy for you.

Have you ever heard the ASSERT Empowerment Self Defense origin story? Well, here's your chance.

It all started back in 2003, when our oldest son was mugged in the 6th grade.

The journey led to us partnering with members from Mental Health and Wellness, Social Justice, Self Defense, and Safety and Security communities to develop the ASSERT ESD Program.

Over the years, we have continued to improve and grow the program into a gender-inclusive, community-geared, culturally relevant, empowerment-based program that is easy to adapt for specific groups and situations, including daily personal self-defense, protestor safety, community building, and inter-community engagement.

As we round out 2021, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on the launch of an ongoing school violence prevention program at Moses McKissack Middle School and hope that you can help us out. So, please, remember ASSERT ESD this upcoming Giving Tuesday (Nov. 30th), as you plan your year-end charitable giving and your on-going giving strategies for 2022 and beyond.

The best is yet to come!
