When It Looks Like ADHD But Isn't - Irlen
Attention deficit disorders are running rampant among today’s youth (at least according to the media). Children who can’t seem to sit still, have trouble focusing and concentrating, and who are easily distracted are being labeled and given medication left and right. Yet, for as many as 50% the p...

WHY ARE RECHECKS IMPORTANT? 🤔
As children grow it is vitally important to check their colour atleast every 2years, as their brains and visual pathways are constantly growing and developing and therefore the tint may need to be altered slightly to take into account these changes. As they get older they also understand better the need to have the tint as accurate as possible, are better at explaining what is happening for them and how the tints are working in order for them and the diagnostician to get the best colour tint possible.
Adults should also have a colour check as lenses can fade which happens quite gradually and can go unnoticed for sometime so they are not getting the full benefit of the lenses. Hormonal and life changes can also be a contributing factor in the need for a re-assessment as the chemicals in our brain change and adapt.
You do NOT grow out of Irlen Syndrome.

Thank you, Joanne Miller, for taking the time to share your experience with us regarding your very bright & brilliant son, Jared. It was a privilege to work with him and your precious family. 🙏♥️💫
TESTIMONIAL FROM ETL PARENT:
“We moved to Nashville when our son, Jared was in 6th grade. In the middle of the school year. He was going to be bussed downtown to a huge school, knowing no one and being odd man out. We knew Jared had learning issues but really didn’t know how severe or what the issues were. He was charismatic, creative, and usually the clown in class. Everyone loved him. However, he had begun to cross the line into doing pranks that got him into trouble with the teachers. Moving to a new environment (a different state) under these circumstances were a recipe for disaster.
We elected to try home schooling him (and this was when homeschooling in Nashville was not widely accepted as it is now). This worked well but we still noticed significant learning issues, particularly with reading and spelling. Often his letters were backwards, and he stumbled a lot with reading to the point where he resisted learning to do better.
It was at this point we contacted Lucy Karen Clay at Expressways to Learning. She did an extensive evaluation and Jared enjoyed working with her. She explained what his learning issues were and how they played into his behavior in order for him to compensate. One thing she did was introduce us to the Irlen Overlay colored film that Jared could lay over the white pages of his reading material. I was brought to tears when I heard him read faster and more eloquently than he had ever done before. I learned he doesn’t function well with bright walls and lights, which had bothered us when we discovered he had covered his bedroom walls with black paper. It worried us that he was just acting out. He seemed to intuitively know what he needed, and Lucy confirmed it. We would ask him to turn off the raucous music he would play while “studying”. How could he possibly learn that way? However, Lucy explained that the music kept one side of his brain occupied so the other could function better.
I could go on and on. Jared has been diagnosed by counselors and psychiatrists as bipolar, dyslexic, ADHD and more. However, this troubled little boy has learned to cope with his learning differences and make them work for his betterment and without medical intervention. We are convinced Jared would never have graduated high school had we not taken him out of the traditional educational system and had the help of Lucy Karen Clay and Expressways to Learning to help us better understand how he is wired.
Today Jared is 42 years old, married, and the father of three adorable children. He “reads” voraciously by listening to audio books, loves documentaries, spent ten years living in Africa and two in Costa Rica and co-wrote and read the audio version of Wisdom Meets Passion with his father, Dan Miller. He has his own branding company and if you look up Jared Angaza online you will see many sites where he is the key figure. He is a strategist and branding expert for Space for Humanity and is making a huge mark in this world.
I can’t thank Lucy and ETL enough for helping us get a glimpse into how Jared is “gifted” and how we could help him adapt to a world that doesn’t cater to his non-traditional way of learning. It changed his world….and ours.

Life-Changing Support for Irlen Syndrome
“I am deeply grateful to Ms. Lucy Karen Clay at Expressways To Learning for being patient, compassionate, and incredibly supportive throughout my journey. She diagnosed my Irlen Syndrome and provided the support I needed. My Irlen lenses have completely transformed my life.
Before my diagnosis, I struggled with chronic headaches, migraines, and reading difficulties. Words would shift on the page, spaces between them looked like rivers, and I often couldn’t retain what I’d read. I didn’t realize how much of my surroundings I was missing—gravel looked like static, water appeared flat, and I never noticed seasonal changes in leaves. Bright days were overwhelming, making daily life and sports painful and frustrating.
Since receiving my lenses, I’ve experienced a whole new world. My headaches disappeared, I haven’t had a migraine, and I can finally see detail and color. Words on a page are clear and stable, reading is easier, and I no longer get car sick. Even my balance and coordination have improved. In college, I had a class requiring me to track wires in electrical diagrams; without my Irlen glasses, that would have been impossible. I only wish I had known about this sooner. I highly recommend
Expressways To Learning to anyone who may benefit from an Irlen diagnosis.”
