The FRA community mourns the death of former head of school John Younger. Mr. Younger was a legendary figure in Nashville education, serving for many years as a teacher, coach, and administrator in public schools before moving on to the Metro Nashville Public Schools central office. After departing MNPS, Mr. Younger joined FRA as its first director of business and finance.

In 1998, he took over as FRA’s head of school until his retirement in 2001. That same year, congressman Bob Clement, a former student, honored Mr. Younger on the House floor by describing his life as “one of joy, humility, faith, friendship, and truth.”

This summer, veteran science educator Stephanie Feyes explored 10 national parks across the American West through the Letter of James Endowed Summer Sabbatical. The program encourages lifelong learning among faculty members who have served at FRA for at least five consecutive years.

As a biology and AP environmental science teacher, Feyes said the experience reinforced the idea that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. She looks forward to bringing new perspectives, experiences, and insights from her travels back to her FRA students.

Michael Walsh ’28 had a front-row seat to international diplomacy this summer through an internship with the Permanent Mission of El Salvador to the United Nations in New York City.

Working under the supervision of El Salvador’s minister counselor, Michael attended sessions, took notes, drafted reports, and presented to delegates from other nations. Much of his work focused on the Permanent Global Mechanism on ICT Security, a new standing UN forum addressing international cybersecurity.

“This opportunity was very informative in terms of what I would like to do in my career,” Michael said. “In the future, I hope to do some form of this, whether it’s working for the U.S., an NGO overseas, or a private company in the realm of economics and international relations.”

Kicked off the morning with a Boo-Hoo Woo-Hoo Breakfast, turning a few first-day tears into plenty of cheers as our kindergarten parents dropped off their students for their first full day of school!

A special thank you to the parents who helped organize such a fun morning. We’re excited for all that’s ahead and look forward to doing life together with our Class of 2039 families!

FRA students are reaching new levels of academic achievement while gaining greater access to college-level coursework.

FRA now offers 31 Advanced Placement courses, more than doubling its AP exam offerings over the past decade. During the 2025-26 school year, students also set new school records for passing AP scores and the percentage of exams earning a 4 or 5.

Nearly 300 students are expected to take at least one AP course this year, continuing FRA’s commitment to challenging and preparing students for what comes next.
