As a college student, the Rev. Sharon Rubey encountered the moment that would shape her ministry and calling.

“We were standing in the communion line… and it was where we served one another,” she recalled. When she turned to serve the person behind her, she saw “a very huge, tall young man… and he didn’t speak the same language that I did.” That brief exchange carried lasting meaning. “We served one another communion. It was moving,” she said. “I knew at that time that… God was showing me what a life of service would be like.”

That moment became a blueprint for her identity and calling as a United Methodist deacon, guiding her as she served across differences in global and local contexts, connecting people, cultures, and communities.

Generosity flows both ways in the United Methodist connection.

In 2025, General Board of Global Ministries and the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry invested $1.72 million in ministries across Western North Carolina — including $1 million toward UMCOR disaster recovery here at home, scholarships for 47 students, and support for local congregations feeding neighbors and welcoming immigrants.

At the same time, WNCC churches and individuals gave more than $333,000 through the Advance to support missionaries and mission work around the world.

That's what it means to be part of a connectional church.

For the Rev. Joaquin Garcia, the call to ministry has never been about a title, position, or appointment, but has always been about responding to need.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, the Rev. Garcia grew up in the Methodist Church, where service and mission were an essential part of daily life. That foundation of compassion shaped his lifelong call to ministries of education, service, and community engagement in Mexico and the United States, leading him to become a member of the first class of the Order of Deacons in 1996.

Watch this video to hear from the Rev. Garcia as he reflects on three decades of service as a United Methodist deacon.

The Rev. Dr. Margaret Ann Crain helped define what it means to be a deacon, even before The United Methodist Church had the language.

Through her substantial educational and ministerial efforts, including her work as a professor of Christian education and director of deacon studies at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, she has helped to shape the theology, identity, and formation of deacons, following a call that predated the creation of the Order of Deacon in 1996.

Watch this video to hear from the Rev. Dr. Crain as she reflects on three decades of ministry dedicated to Word, service, compassion, and justice.
