Every Tuesday and Friday, students of The Law & Leadership School gather at the Justice A.A. Birch Building for our Court Observation Class. ⚖️📚
I’m excited and honored to serve as Head of School for a school where learning isn’t limited to four walls. We’re facilitating education right in the center of democracy—inside the courthouse, inside the Capitol, and in the spaces where laws are actually being applied.
Today, we’re in Judge Sam Coleman’s courtroom, observing the Civil Docket.
Our students are getting a firsthand look at landlord-tenant proceedings, including eviction cases, while learning about rules of procedure, due process, the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, and how the court system operates in real time.
We don’t just want our students to READ about the law.
We want them to SEE IT. HEAR IT. UNDERSTAND IT. AND KNOW HOW IT WORKS. 💯⚖️
Because at The Law & Leadership School, we’re preparing young people to walk into courtrooms, government buildings, colleges, careers, and communities already understanding systems that many people don’t learn about until they’re forced to navigate them.
📚 TERM OF THE DAY: DEFAULT JUDGMENT
A default judgment is a judgment a court may enter against a party who fails to appear, respond, or otherwise defend a case as required ( typically after being properly served and put on notice ).
This is what education looks like when the COURTROOM becomes the CLASSROOM. ⚖️🦅
