Immersing MNPS middle school students in research-based STEM curriculum.

Students from McMurray, Croft, and Oliver middle schools in the Day of Discovery program completed their unit on digestive physiology by drawing the digestive system of a herbivore on a life size rhino while supervised by the Nashville Zoo’s rhinoceros herd. This unit began in January with a visit to the Zoo’s commissary where every day, zoo staff prepare restaurant quality food for over 3,500 animals. Students learned about their own digestive systems by drawing them out on t-shirts. They compared herbivore, omnivore, carnivore systems through an inquiry based activity, and met some of the Zoo’s ambassador animals with unique digestive systems. This content aligns with Tennessee state and Next Generation science standards while also supporting the zoo’s mission of inspiring understanding and discovery of the natural world.
