The goal for education, including a Common Good Education (CGE), is to develop the individual’s highest potential in service to the common good. Many youth today are clamoring for a new way to live, work, and be in the world. Often they do not articulate this need directly. Instead it can be observed in their seeming “laziness,” unwillingness to work (or rather allow work to consume the entirety of their lives!), and refusal to buy into the American Dream, elevating the few and abandoning the many. I believe CGE can help educators, social workers, psychologists, parents, and youth workers begin to motivate young people in ways that transform them and change us all for the better.
