Rest in peace, and rise in power, Rev. James Lawson (1928-2024). Lawson's students played a leading role in the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, Freedom Summer, the Children's Crusade in Birmingham, the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, the Chicago Freedom Movement, and the Anti-Vietnam War Movement.
James Lawson, an architect of civil rights nonviolence, dies at 95
A Methodist minister, he was a principal tactician behind the sit-ins, marches and Freedom Rides that withstood attacks by mobs and police throughout the 1960s.
