Student-AI privacy standards are moving faster than legislation Microsoft has just agreed to nationwide restrictions on educational AI tools, including limits on using student or educator information for advertising, product development or model training. The agreement also calls for audits and clearer family disclosures. The standards take effect starting November 1, 2026, applying to all U.S. school districts and independent schools with Microsoft contracts.

USDA’s new Harvest to Hallways initiative includes up to $70 million for cafeteria equipment and storage, plus $25 million for farm-to-school grants. An additional $32.5 million HHS initiative will finance experimental approaches. Tennessee officials are awaiting application guidance.

For example, Milan Special School District and other systems may have equipment to prepare fresh food but lack recurring funds to buy it after the Local Food for Schools program ended in 2025. Infrastructure grants do not solve operating-budget shortfalls.

We believe one-time money should buy durable equipment, while recurring food expenses need a predictable funding source and measurable nutritional benefit.
