From Vanderbilt School of Engineering to NASCAR driver to Team Penske executive, Travis Geisler, BE’03, returned to Nashville this weekend for Sunday’s Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

In a recent profile by The Tennessean, Geisler reflected on the path that took him from the driver’s seat to vice president of NASCAR competition, where he helps lead many of the engineering and race-day operations that keep Team Penske’s cars running.

The Vanderbilt Motorsports Team earned a 3rd Place finish in Efficiency out of 115 collegiate competitors at the Formula SAE competition held at the Michigan International Speedway, May 13-16. The 25-person Motorsports Team (12 of whom traveled to Michigan) worked throughout the year to build one of the competition's lightest cars, weighing in at just 343 lbs. — a feat that takes "constant effort in design and fabrication," said Phil Davis, the team's faculty advisor.

The annual Formula SAE event challenges undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, and test small formula-style vehicles.

Vanderbilt Motorsports Team President Sebastien Jacques, a rising senior majoring in mechanical engineering, said while the car didn't have its best day in the speed or endurance competitions, students are already tuning up for next year's race.
