After 19 years at the Vanderbilt School of Engineering, the 20th Healthcare Design and Construction Symposium marked a milestone as it moved to Vanderbilt Universityâs newly opened campus in New York City on July 29-30.
The annual symposium brings together leaders in healthcare administration, construction, and design to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of healthcare environments.
This yearâs symposium also honored Sanjiv Gokhale, with contributions made in his honor to the VU School of Engineering Construction Management Next Generation Leaders Fund. The fund will provide students with opportunities for professional development, certifications, conference participation, and career advancement, helping shape the future leaders of our industry.

Researchers say a balanced approach using both conventional and clean energy resources to meet rising energy needs will help ensure a stable energy supply, support economic development, and reduce the environmental impact of energy production.
But how best to achieve this? That will be the focus of the Vanderbilt Center for Sustainability, Energy and Climateâs (VSEC) 2026 Symposium to be held in Nashville Sept. 2-4, 2026. This yearâs symposium is being held in collaboration with the New Voices of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
The topics for this yearâs symposium include cross-scale energy integration and system complexity, distributed energy resources and flexible storage, energy resilience and power system management under extreme events, and materials, devices, and technologies across scales for decarbonization.

Pratim Biswas, a leading academic leader, member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a renowned aerosol scientist whose work has applications in energy and environmental nanotechnology, solar energy, air quality, medicine, and numerous other fields, has been named the inaugural Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering Innovation at Vanderbilt Universityâs West Palm Beach campus. He will also be the Executive Director for Global Engagement at the Vanderbilt School of Engineering.
Biswas will hold the Stevenson Chair in Engineering as Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, effective August 16.
Biswas joins Vanderbilt from the University of Miami, where he served as dean of the College of Engineering. Previously, he was assistant vice chancellor for international programs and chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.

Xiaoguang D**g, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and core member of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering, has received a highly competitive $2.86 million NIH R01 award from the National Institutes of Health to develop a next-generation smart airway stent capable of continuously monitoring airway conditions in patients with central airway obstruction.
CAO is a life-threatening condition in which the trachea or major bronchi become narrowed or blocked, making it difficult for patients to breathe. The disease affects approximately 20â30% of patients with lung cancer and can also result from other respiratory diseases. Airway stents are commonly used to keep the airway open, but they frequently become obstructed by mucus buildup or infection, often requiring repeated bronchoscopic procedures for evaluation and treatment.
D**g's team will develop a wirelessly powered sensory airway stent capable of measuring mucus accumulation and airway conditions inside the body. The device combines miniature sensors, wireless power transfer, Bluetooth communication, and magnetic actuation to enable long-term monitoring without requiring implanted batteries or frequent invasive procedures.
