Book'em empowers Nashville's underprivileged children by fostering a love of books and reading.

Book'em gives thousands of books each year to underprivileged children, many of whom do not have books at home. Most of the books we give away are donated to us by individuals and through book drives conducted by businesses and organizations. We also send 250+ volunteers into the community to read to pre-school and elementary school children.

Kaitlyn Benavides, an MNPS parent, organized a “Free Book Store” for a K–2 Book Club at Rosebank Elementary in East Nashville, giving students the chance to choose their own books and discover the joy of reading 📚💛

Moments like these remind us how powerful access to books can be.

When students choose their own books, they are more motivated, more engaged, and more likely to develop a love of reading. Research also shows self-selected reading can be twice as effective in building those skills (Guthrie & Humenick; Scholastic).

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and this month’s book drive highlights stories that reflect the cultures, experiences and voices of AAPI communities. 📚

Books help children see themselves in stories and learn about the world around them. By donating, you’re helping ensure young readers have access to books that celebrate diversity and representation.
