Dear PSA Member Coaches,

Like you, I coach figure skating, and I have for many years taught in Nashville, Tennessee. With so many critical things happening right now for all of us I wanted to reach out to you and ask for your help.

As many of you are aware, the PSA is fighting for its existence now as US Figure Skating has determined that it will take over coaches education. The PSA itself was created and nurtured by many fine coaches who came before us and who worked very hard to establish the PSA as the premier coaching association in the country. In fact, we were recognized as that by the USOC, when they determined that we were the educational arm figure skating in the United States.

The PSA has been directed by a Board of Governors and an Executive Committee for many years, both of which represent us as this is a member driven organization. Recent developments are alarming to say the least, with nine of our current board members now serving on US Figure Skating Coaches Council concurrently, while that organization is taking over the PSA’s primary functions. Even though they voted themselves that this was not a conflict of interest last year, I think that is something that we as members should vote on.

The PSA Board of Governors last year did also vote to approve a three-year plan of transition. This plan would have allowed us to financially be prudent while we were in discussions with US Figure Skating while we kept our options open for other opportunities. It appears that the Executive Committee decided to not honor that vote and move ahead with dissolving the PSA. Again, I feel that this a member critical issue, and yet we have not voted on it while they have headlong moved towards dissolving the PSA.

While I have been a lifetime member of US Figure Skating, I recognize that the association has struggled in the past 15 or 20 years in many aspects of management of the sport. In the past three years, US Figure Skating has borrowed $17 million from their foundation to try to support the programming. They have also this year cut the office staff in half, indicating that clearly the finances will not support the current expenditures.

We also know that member clubs have lost control of events, and in general, the finances of hosting a competition no longer provide the support for local skaters as in years past. In addition, a very large portion of any funds that come in to the US Figure Skating go to only the elite skaters and their programming, leaving very little for the development of the sport, which has traditionally supported the organization.

In short, I believe it is time for the members of the PSA to be heard and have a voice in our future. There is substantial funding left over from the sale of the PSA property to run the association on a very scaled down version as we explore other opportunities that could be out there for us to remain viable.

In order to address the PSA Board of Governors and the Executive Committee we need 50 coaches to sign onto a motion to be presented to the both entities. Simply put having 50 coaches officially gives us status to address some of the issues and decide together whether it’s better to rush into oblivion or conserve and explore opportunities for the PSA moving forward.
