Professional School Counselors (PSC) are part of the academic gatekeeping system whether we acknowledge it or not. We hold power to advise, encourage and empathize.
Our program teaches future PSCs to view students holistically, advocate for students needs and promote wellness. Therefore, as gatekeepers, we build more doors instead of walls to usher students across said gates.
The quote is from the book For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts by Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez, Chapter 4 Myth of Meritocracy.

Today’s comes from a book Dr. Webb is recommending to many people who come by his office. It’s an empowering book that shows there’s always a semicolon ; in life. When things fall apart or are lost, it truly leaves room for growth.
Check out the The Beauty in Breaking: A Memoir by Michele Harper.

We would like to congratulate (Allison Simpson) and (Tionna James: award accepted by her lovely brother in the photos) for being recognized as our outstanding Professional School Counseling students this year!
These women’s prodigious growth has been inspirational and a testament to what you can accomplish when you have the resilience and the supportive community.
On a real note, TSU Professional School Counseling students are the best.

Fostering grit and mental toughness requires commitment and consistency in both the small and big tasks. It’s those moments that add up and make success inevitable for the gritty athlete and student.

Today is our first post!
Part of Dr. Rocha’s research includes studying the construct of grit. First, why is it important to foster grit?
Researchers compared well-being to grit and found that grittier individuals were more optimistic (Datu et al., 2016; Sheridan et al., 2015), had higher life satisfaction (Datu et al., 2016; Singh & Jha, 2008), higher job satisfaction (Meriac et al., 2015), less work burnout (Salles et al., 2014) and less su***de ideation (Kleiman et al., 2013; Reed et al., 2012).
Stay tuned for differentiating grit, resilience, and perseverance. We’ll also include exercises and interventions to increase a sense of grit and resilience. (Pro tip: some of it has to do with holistic wellness practices and positive relationships)
