We fish as a family. It is an activity that my husband and I enjoyed together before children and have now carried it over into the education of our children. Fishing is a multi-sensorial activity that Salima and Jahlil are both drawn to because of the relationship they have already begun to build with nature. We do not encourage them to fish. We provide them materials to explore and guide them as they engage in those materials. Montessori is a lifestyle for us. Their first sign of interest is the most appropriate time to teach!

My student just got in the door two minutes ago and we are engaged in child-led peer-assisted reading practice. I am so proud of them. Can you tell we have been working hard? πŸ₯°πŸ˜

β€œChildren still need a childhood with dirt, mud, puddles, trees, sticks, and tadpoles.” - Brooke Hampton

Once children begin to intentionally explore language and making choices for themselves in a prepared environment such as the Montessori one, they become evidently busier with their own way of thinking. The refining of gross motor skills in the classroom also makes them more active and eager to be in motion. And we make time for all of that. I take them outside for fresh air, ample space for bodily movement, and natural exploring and research through play. Today they accidentally discovered that Pine Trees have sap.

β€œThe best education does not happen at a desk, but rather engaged in everyday living- hands on, exploring, in active relationship with life.” - Vince Gowman

This is so powerful.
Read it once.

Sometimes we need to just "turn a blind eye" and let the play happen! πŸ˜„πŸ˜†
