Deepening the bond and getting closer to your kids is simpler than you might think.

SHARED MEMORIES.

Not another lecture.

Not another rule.

Just time spent together, doing something fun, side by side.

This is what makes that kind of time so powerful.

Years from now, this is what gets remembered.

Not the chores. Not the routines.

The moments. ❀️

So let's hear what your version of this looks like.

Is it a hike?

Is it a drive?

Is it a silly game night?

Anything that pulls you both out of the daily grind.

This is the real secret. Connection isn't built in the big milestone moments. It's built in the small, ordinary ones you choose to share together.

If you're looking for even more ways to strengthen that connection with your teen, that's exactly what our coaching program helps families build.

Take 10 minutes for yourself today. πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ

Find a quiet spot. Close your eyes.

Just breathe.

INHALE. HOLD. EXHALE SLOWLY.

It sounds small. It's not.

A few minutes of mindfulness can clear your mind, lower your stress, and completely reset your mood.

YOU DESERVE THIS BREAK.

Not when everything's done. Not when things calm down. Today.

Try it. See how it feels.

Where's the place that brings YOU the most peace? 🌿

Drop it in the comments. We want to know.

Struggling to connect with your teen?

You're not alone. πŸ’›

Here are some amazing questions to try asking them.

"What was the most exciting thing that happened today?"
This is a good question because it skips right past "fine" and asks for something specific.

"Tell me about a cool fact you learned at school recently."
This works because it's about curiosity, not performance, so there's no pressure to have a "good" answer.

"If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?"
A great one because it opens up imagination and values, not just facts.

"What's something that made you laugh or smile today?"
This one gets you the emotional highlight of their day, not just the logistics.

"Did you create or draw anything awesome in art class?"
A good way to spotlight creativity your teen might not usually talk about.

"Who's your hero or role model, and why do they inspire you?"
This question reveals what your teen actually admires, which tells you a lot about who they're becoming.

"If you could have any meal for dinner tonight, what would it be?"
Low stakes, high engagement. Sometimes the easiest questions open the door best.

"What's a challenge you faced today, and how did you overcome it?"
This one builds the habit of recognizing their own resilience out loud.

"If you had a superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?"
A fun way to learn what your teen actually values, through the lens of imagination.

"What's something you're grateful for today?"
Simple, but it shifts the whole tone of the conversation toward gratitude.

Open-ended questions like these lead to richer conversations, and help your teen express themselves more freely. 😊

Let's keep those family conversations fun, insightful, and full of love. ❀️

Big dreams are the easy part.
Figuring out the next step β€” that's where most teens (and parents) get stuck.

Southwestern Student Coach, George Lovera SWC, joined NewsChannel 5's "Let Me Help" to talk with parents about one of the most common challenges in raising a teenager:

helping them move from "I want to do something big someday" to an actual plan they're excited to work toward.

In this segment, George shares:
βœ… How to open up the conversation without it feeling like an interrogation
βœ… Why encouragement has to come before strategy
βœ… Simple ways to help teens take their very first step forward

If you're a parent watching your teen dream big and wondering how to help without taking over, this one's for you.

Southwestern Student Coaching helps teens build the confidence, goal-setting skills, and self-accountability to go after what they want β€” with a coach in their corner every step of the way.

Years of driving them to practice.

Reminding them about homework.

Late-night snack runs.

And suddenly, you're carrying a mini-fridge into a dorm room, trying not to sob in public. 😭

DON'T CRY. DON'T CRY. DON'T CRY.

Except, of course, you will. And that's exactly as it should be.

This transition is emotional for parents too. Exciting, hard, beautiful, all at once. And honestly, a reminder of just how fast the years actually went.

Here's something that helps, though.

Independence isn't something teens have to figure out cold, the moment they step onto campus. It's something they can build toward, long before move-in day. ❀️

Confidence. Time management. Emotional intelligence. Leadership. Vision.

These are the things that make the transition feel less like a cliff and more like a launch.

Big news for Southwestern Student Coaching! πŸŽ‰

Our own Student Coach George Lovera was recently featured on NewsChannel 5’s β€œLet Me Help” to talk about something every parent of a teen knows: big dreams are exciting, but figuring out what to do next can be the tricky part.

George shared practical ways parents can help their teens turn those dreams into meaningful goalsβ€”and put those goals into action. It starts with encouragement, conversation, and helping teens take that next step forward.

We’re so proud of George for bringing this message to families right here in our local community.

The more support teens have as they set goals and think about their future, the more confident they can feel about what comes next.

Way to go, George! πŸ™Œ

You don't know what you want.

You don't know where you're going.

Everyone keeps asking, "What's the plan?" and you don't have one.

THAT FEELING IS EXHAUSTING.

For a lot of teens (and let's be honest, a lot of us), that confusion is the hardest part. Not the failing. Not the hard work. Just not knowing what you're even working toward.

Here's something that actually helps. πŸ‘‡

A VISION BOARD.

Not just cutting out pretty pictures. A real, physical reminder of the places you want to visit, the things you want to accomplish, the life you're building, piece by piece.

On the days you don't want to do the things you need to do, you look at that board. And suddenly you remember why.

That's the shift. Confusion turns into direction. "I don't know," turns into, "Here's what I'm working toward."

NOW WE WANT TO SEE YOURS. πŸ‘€

Already have a vision board? Send us a picture of it. We'd love to see what you're building toward.

Never made one before? Comment "VISION BOARD" below and let's change that.

Does your teen struggle with fear, worry, anxiety, or feeling low?

This might be part of why, and here's a tool that can genuinely help.

Picture a dartboard. 🎯

THE OUTER RING is everything they can't control. Other people's opinions. What happens at school. The future in general.

THE MIDDLE RING is what they can influence, but not fully control. Relationships. Grades. How others respond to them.

THE BULLSEYE is the small handful of things they actually control, completely.

Their schedule.

Their activity.

Their attitude, and the words they use with others.

Most of the fear and worry teens carry comes from living out in that outer ring, trying to control things that were never theirs to control in the first place.

The bullseye is where relief actually lives. ❀️

To any teen reading this: you're not broken, and you're not alone. A lot of what you're feeling makes sense when you understand where your energy has been going.

To parents: this isn't a replacement for professional support if your teen needs it, but it is a real, practical tool you can start using with them today.

If you want ongoing support building these skills, that's exactly what our Student Coaching program is built for.

We've all been there. That moment you open your teen's report card and suddenly need a deep breath. Or two. πŸ˜…

Grades aren't just about smarts. They're about habits.

TIME MANAGEMENT.

Can they actually get their homework done without a nightly battle? Can they balance school with chores, activities, everything else on their plate?

STUDY SKILLS.

Are they actually learning the material, or just memorizing it the night before? Are they talking to you about what they're learning, or preparing for tests with any real strategy?

ACCOUNTABILITY.

Did you set a standard for the report card, or a standard for the effort behind it? Are they taking ownership, or waiting for you to catch the problem first?

CONFIDENCE IN LEARNING.

Do they actually believe they're capable of understanding hard material, or have they already decided they're just "not a math person" or "not a good student"?

THAT'S EXACTLY WHERE STUDENT COACHING COMES IN.

If report card day keeps feeling like a surprise instead of a reflection of habits you already knew were shaky, that's the real problem worth solving. Not the grade itself. The systems underneath it.

08/14/2026

A while back, this student couldn't have told you their five-year plan.

Now? They can tell you their dream life, step by step, and exactly what it's going to take to get there.

Here's what changed.

CONFIDENCE. Not the kind you fake. The kind that comes from actually proving to yourself you can follow through.

SCHEDULING. Knowing how to structure a day instead of just reacting to it.

PRIORITIZING. Figuring out what actually matters before the day gets away from them.

STAYING CALM. Learning how to handle hard moments without spiraling.

FINANCES. Understanding money instead of avoiding it.

None of this happened by accident. It happened because they finally had someone in their corner helping them build the plan and follow through on it. ❀️

In their own words: "I can do whatever I want to do, but I have to put in the effort to make that happen."

That's the whole shift. Not luck. Not talent. Just a clear plan, and the confidence to actually execute it.

If you want to see this kind of change in your own teen, this is exactly what student coaching is built for.
