"Skilled trades account for about 20 million jobs in the U.S., or 9% of the total workforce, according to a new report from labor market intelligence firm Lightcast — and the need for that talent only continues to increase.

The report defined skilled trades as 135 hands-on, in-person occupations requiring specialized education, training, certification, apprenticeship or experience but not a college degree. By that definition, there are approximately 2.1 million skilled-trade job openings every year, and about three job openings for every person who has finished a relevant training program.

This has created an estimated talent gap of 1.3 million workers, per the report. In seven of the 10 most in-demand skilled-trade occupations, there is already a significant labor shortage, with retirement accounting for about 40% of annual openings."

The supply of skilled workers only continues to tighten as more reach retirement age amid rising demand, a Lightcast report said.
