EARLIER IN THE SUMMER, I SUPPORTED A COUPLE AT THE HOSPITAL. I HAD SERVED AS AN EDUCATOR & PROVIDED COUNSEL AS WELL THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY. HERE'S WHAT THEY SAID.
We had such a great experience with our doula Seena. She is an incredibly caring, attentive and responsive person. She brought so much experience, information, and something that I really needed, reassurance, throughout the whole process. We especially appreciated the helpful resources she shared with us and the opportunity to meet several times in person before the birth—it really helped us feel prepared, confident and supported. We’re so grateful to have had her by our side!

SOMETIMES I AM BEYOND WORDS GRATEFUL! Late last night I got the call around 11:30 - "we'd like you to come now" ...... Out of bed and 15 minutes later, in my car heading to the hsopital. What struck me so powerfully about this experience was the seamless and beautifully sensitive and supportive teamwork between the nurse, couple and myself. A 41 weeks induction, fourth birth, and this was a vbac. She was somewhat preoccupied with pitocin; AND THERE WAS NONE!! The balloon was inserted at 1.5-2 cm and 90 mins later the balloon fell out. I knew then, this is not going to be a long one. Less than an hour later, active labor was moving along. I was not surprised and definitely, incredibly impressed with this Mom's abilities to listen to and trust what her body was telling her. A big part of my role was listening carefully to her signs and questions - helping her clarify what her options were at several different points, and understand the benefits and downsides of one way or the other. Transition was short and powerful, birthing was quick, powerful and beautiful. Barely any wounds, a great latch and lots of tears of joy & gratitude.

Being there matters.

So much of what people carry is invisible. Someone in our community may be struggling with loneliness, anxiety, grief, depression, or thoughts they are afraid to say out loud. A parent may be worried about a child and unsure what to do. A friend may sense that something is wrong but not know how to respond.

In those moments, being there can make all the difference. Sometimes it means answering the phone when someone feels completely alone. Sometimes it means listening without trying to fix. Sometimes it means recognizing distress and having the courage to ask a difficult question. And sometimes, one conversation can change the course of a night or even a life.

Being there matters
