On May 20, North Central College President Abiódún Gòkè-Paríolá visited Argonne National Laboratory alongside Dr. Herman White, college trustee; Shelly Galasso ’05, assistant vice president for corporate, foundation, and sponsored research support; and Dr. Sun-il Kim, professor of computer science and engineering.
The North Central College team was hosted by Dr. Paul Kearns, laboratory director, and Dr. Sean L. Jones, deputy laboratory director for science and technology at Argonne, who participated in a panel discussion about artificial intelligence (AI) that the College co-hosted with U.S. Rep. Bill Foster in February.
During the visit, the group toured several of Argonne’s cutting-edge facilities, including the Aurora Supercomputer — one of the world’s first exascale supercomputers, capable of processing data at unprecedented speeds.
North Central College has a strong and growing connection with Argonne. Since 2018, 28 North Central students have completed internships at the laboratory. With the launch of the College’s new minor in Artificial Intelligence, there is the potential for even more students to have opportunities to explore careers and research experiences in this rapidly evolving field.
Thank you to the Argonne team for hosting such an informative and inspiring visit!

As May marks the height of college decision season, recent graduate Macy Fleury ’26 reflected on her decision to attend North Central College years ago as a senior at Naperville North High School.
From planning six different service trips across the U.S. to build houses with Habitat for Humanity through the North Central club, Breakaway, to conducting research on exercise and self-esteem with the exercise science department, she says she “couldn’t be happier” with her decision.

At North Central’s 50th Annual Honors Convocation, Dr. Kristin Patel ’04 recognized Logan Selsky ’26 as the Outstanding Major in Health Science — a moment made even more meaningful by their unique connection.
In 2004, Logan attended Dr. Patel’s North Central graduation as a baby in the arms of her mother, Dr. Kendall Selsky ’93 — Patel’s professor and mentor in the College’s athletic training program.
Years later, when Logan began her studies at North Central, Patel became the same source of guidance and encouragement that Logan’s mother, Kendall, had once been for her — bringing their story of mentorship full circle.
