The mission of the Vibration Institute is to disseminate practical information on evaluating machine Michael Blake of Lovejoy, Inc.

The Vibration Institute’s steadfast commitment to our mission took root more than four decades ago. felt strongly that an organization was needed for scientists, engineers and other professionals representing a broad cross-section of industries to share information about measuring and analyzing vibration.

1967 – Michael P. Blake organized a small symposium sponsored by Lovejoy for exchanging info

to the 2022 VIATC Proceedings and Robert J. Sayer, PE’s paper, “The Use and Abuse of the Single Degree-of-Freedom Vibration Model.”

Bob’s paper is a great reminder that simple models can teach powerful fundamentals — but real machines and structures are rarely simple. From modal participation to 2-degree-of-freedom systems and finite element analysis, the paper walks through why understanding the limitations of a model is just as important as knowing how to use it.

This is exactly the kind of technical depth Vibration Institute members can access through conference proceedings and member resources throughout the year.

And there’s more to come: Bob Sayer will be leading the pre-conference workshop “Natural Frequency Testing of Structures, Rotors, and Foundations” at VIATC 2026 in Fort Worth.

Explore member resources, revisit the proceedings, and make plans to join us August 5–7, with pre-conference workshops beginning August 4.
