Meet the wineries: Antiyal — our final stop 🇨🇱

We're saving something special for last. Antiyal is the estate of Álvaro Espinoza, the winemaker widely credited with single-handedly bringing biodynamic viticulture to South America — after training at Château Margaux in Bordeaux and Moët & Chandon in Champagne. Decanter later named him one of the world's 30 most influential winemakers.

Everything here is certified organic and biodynamic, farmed on volcanic, basaltic soil in the Andes foothills, made in small batches with minimal intervention — proof that some of Chile's most thoughtful wine isn't made at the biggest estates.

That's all six wineries — four valleys, one incredible week.

Stop five of six on our Chile itinerary. Meet the wineries: Clos Apalta 🇨🇱

This is a "bucket list" stop. Clos Apalta's winery is carved seven levels, 35 meters down into granite bedrock, using gravity alone to move the wine from grape to barrel to bottle — no pumps, no shortcuts. Some of the vines on the property date back to 1907.

The flagship blend is Carmenère-led — Chile's signature grape — layered with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a Bordeaux-style wine that's earned a perfect 100-point score not once, but three times, including the 2017 vintage.

When writing tasting notes, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to guess the wine right away. If you assume a wine is a Sauvignon Blanc before thoroughly analyzing it, you’ll naturally start writing notes skewed toward that assumption even if your initial guess was wrong! 💡

The Rule: Pay attention strictly to what is in your glass.
1. Assess the visual appearance, aroma, and palate objectively.
2. Let your observations lead to the conclusion, not the other way around.
3. Trust your systematic approach over quick guesses.
