The assessment starts with curiosity and conversation. Asking thoughtful, specific, open-ended questions before you even lay hands on the horse can help you gather valuable pieces of information that paint a more complete picture of the animal standing in front of you.

Our take on the oversimplification of "I address fascia, not muscle." Language matters! What are your thoughts, as an equine body worker?

PALPATION 101 👐 It can be easy to assume that a twitch, stomp, or jerk means you have found a problem, but this is our friendly reminder to you that horses have normal neurological reflexes, or automatic responses that are just as natural as the human knee-jerk reflex.

Learning to distinguish a normal reflex from a repeatable, meaningful response is one of the most important palpation skills you can develop.

As your hands become more educated, you'll begin to notice subtle differences in tissue texture, muscle tone, temperature, movement patterns, and you'll start to ask deeper questions about dental evaluations and tack fit, which all tells a much bigger and more accurate story than a single reaction ever could.

The power of TOUCH✋Regular equine social behavior involves grooming one another, moving in sync as a herd, and generally co-regulating each other. This can be seen in both sides of the spectrum: How horses can ramp each other up and suddenly the whole herd is running through the pasture at mock 10, or in how they all take a morning nap together at the same time.
