Nanticoke Historical Society

Nanticoke History The Nanticoke Historical Society was formed in 1996 as a number of historical sites in the city were being demolished.

Notably among those were the Kosciuszko Junior High School and the State Theatre. A few life long residents of the city ranging in age from 20 to 80 realized that if certain parts of Nanticoke's history weren't preserved now, then these things would be lost forever. This group then began a quest to obtain and preserve any and all items which served as a link to Nanticoke's history. The purpose of

this preservation is threefold:
First and most obvious is the actual maintenance of those items in a manner that they may be preserved and safeguarded, however, that they may also be studied in a historical sense. Second, to catalog and categorize these items in such a manner as to facilitate legitimate study and research. Thirdly, to be able to provide information to, and perform research for those who seek to learn about the history of Nanticoke and its people.

Tasseography is an ancient divination practice of
interpreting pattems formed by tea leaves in a cup.
What do the shapes in your teacup tell you?
Learn the meaning of the symbols you may see in
your cup.
A brief history of tasseography will be presented. The Tasseographer
will guide you in preparing your cup of tea and lead participants to
interpret the shapes within the teacup in a group setting. You will
then read your own leaves as well as those in another's cup.
Dr. Gronkowski follows in the footsteps of her Slavic ancestors by
combining tasseography with intuitive impressions, making the
method of reading more divination than an inherent psychic reading.

The Nanticoke Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 at the Society offices in the historic Samantha Mill House, 495 E. The Wyoming Commemorative Association ceremony honoring the July 3, 1778, Battle and Massacre of Wyoming was truly amazing. We were thrilled to present a wreath in tribute to those who fought bravely and gave their lives. The Wyoming Valley Band energized the crowd with stirring patriotic marches and a heartfelt salute to the armed forces. A presentation by Christopher Pearl, Ph.D. Chair of the Lycoming College History Department gave those attending the history of the battle and why it was so important for our freedom. Thank you to the Wyoming Commemorative Association for this truly wonderful event.

You may be surprised to know that men from Nanticoke, what at the time was known as Hanover, left their homes and farms and went to engage the British on July 3, 1778 at the Battle of Wyoming. The Society is honored to be presenting a wreath at the Wyoming Monument Commemoration to be held on Saturday, July 4 at 10 a.m. We will have more on the story in the September issue of Nanticoke Legacy.
The Wyoming Monument commemoration will take place on July 4, 2026 at the Wyoming Monument on Wyoming Avenue This is the annual observance of the 1778 Battle and Massacre of Wyoming, one of the bloodiest events of the American Revolutionary War

We want to thank Nanticoke Mayor Kevin Coughlin, City Manager, Donna Wall and Ann Grzymski for all of their hard work in making the celebration of our country and our city possible this past weekend. Regardless of the weather, we had such a great time at Nanticoke's Big Bang event. although there were rain drops, the parade went on. People on porches and on the street with umbrellas waving and celebrating.,

We're hoping the weather holds and we'll see you at the City's Big Bang Parade on Saturday June 27. Did you enter a float? Well if you did, the judges will be seated at the top of Green Street up from the Mill Memorial Library, to vote on MOST PATRIOTIC, MOST ETHNIC AND THE BEST categories. The parade lines up at 11 a.m. at GNA High School, 12 p.m. start and will end up at LCCC at 1 p.m.
