Charles County Public Schools students from La Plata High School went bug-crazy, analyzing macroinvertebrates to test water quality, and although La Plata doesn't have a campus stream, the team brought the stream to the students instead. 🌟🌱💧👍

Recently, Charles County Public Schools Elementary Science Teachers visited Nanjemoy Creek EE Center for their end of year meeting. It was such a beautiful day that we had to get them out on the water to learn about watersheds and stream dynamics! 🐟🌊🛶🛟

Who's ready for some Vitamin N (nature)? This dose highlights the Giant Stag Beetle or Elk Stag Beetle (Lucanus elaphus), which is one of SOMD's largest beetles. SOMD is thought to be the northern edge of the beetles' habitat (coastal region). The large, white larvae (grubs) live in decomposing hardwood for up to 3 years before emerging as an adult only to live for a few months (adults are active May through August).

It's Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week, which celebrates the cultures, history and natural beauty of the nation's largest estuary. Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary is located in the Potomac River, which is the Chesapeake Bay's second largest tributary. It provides about one-quarter of all the freshwater flowing into the estuary!

In the sanctuary, the freshwater of the Potomac River meets the saltier waters from the Chesapeake Bay, resulting in a dynamic, estuarine environment that fluctuates with the tides. This habitat supports a variety of iconic Chesapeake Bay species, including ospreys, bald eagles, striped bass, blue crabs, and more.
