Soy Sauce officially became a sow/mama today!

All 8 little piglets nursing together for the first time. She laid right down, stretched out and let every one of those babies pile in. 😂

Well we got quite the surprise during morning chores today!

We came outside this morning and Soy Sauce had delivered her very first litter ALL BY HERSELF out in the back pasture along the fence!

12 piglets!!

Unfortunately 3 of the little babies didn’t make it, but we have 9 healthy little piglets and so far everybody is doing great.

We got Soy Sauce and all the babies moved into one of the stables, got them fresh straw, built the babies their own little area with a heat lamp and made sure everybody was nursing.

And Soy Sauce is doing awesome! She’s eating, drinking, laying on her side letting all the babies nurse and seems to be figuring out this whole mama thing pretty quickly. 😂

After losing Ginger and her babies 5 days ago… we definitely needed this one.

And as you can probably tell from the pictures… the kids are just 🤏 excited. 😂

A few days ago, we lost Ginger and her litter of piglets. 💔

This is the part of farm life that you don’t really think about when you’re excited about new babies coming.

When you raise and breed animals, there’s so much life happening around you. New babies, first steps, watching them grow, watching your kids fall in love with them.

But with all of that life sometimes comes loss, too.

Over the years, we’ve lost babies, experienced miscarriages, and lost mama animals around childbirth. We’ve experienced it with our goats, our rabbits, and now our pigs. It never gets easier.

A few days ago, the kids and I left for a few hours to visit someone we love in the hospital. Ginger was up and walking around when we left. When we came home, something was terribly wrong… and within a few short minutes, we watched her take her last breath.

We don’t know exactly what happened, only that something went wrong late in her pregnancy. Unfortunately, we lost her babies with her.

We had been waiting so patiently for those little piglets. We were all excited and couldn’t wait to watch Ginger become a mama.

But that’s how farming goes… There are some really beautiful days, and there are some really hard ones.

We’ll miss you, Ginger. 🤍🐷

Now we’re keeping a close eye on Soy Sauce, who is due with her litter soon. Fingers crossed for a safe delivery, a healthy mama, and healthy little piglets. 🤞

Meet Angel y’all!

Me and the kids picked up the newest addition to Reynolds Family Farms today!

Angel is a beautiful 2-year-old proven, pedigreed Blue-Eyed White Holland Lop.

She’s so sweet, friendly, and curious… an incredible temperament.

We’ve been looking for the right doe to add to our rabbitry, and apparently we had to go all the way up north to Coeur d’Alene to find her.

She made the trip down today and we finally got to bring her home.

Molly came along with me to pick her up, and I think it’s safe to say Angel is already going to get plenty of attention around here.

Ginger is getting HUGE!!

She still comes running when we walk up to the fence, but she’s definitely bringing up the rear these days. That belly is practically touching the ground and swaying side to side when she runs. 😂 We’re thinking she’s definitely going to have her piglets before Soy Sauce. Getting close!

And little Brave is growing like crazy too. Madison was giving her a bottle today and you can see her tiny little horns starting to come in.

Last time you saw Brave trying to take a bottle… it was a whole situation. 😂

She was 3 weeks old when we brought her home and had never been bottle fed before. We literally had to hold her, pry her little mouth open, and convince her that the bottle was actually a good thing.

Well… LOOK AT HER NOW. 😂🐐

This little girl knows exactly what time it is when she sees us coming. She runs right up, wants that bottle, and drinks it standing on her own like a big girl now.

Safe to say Brave has officially figured out this whole bottle baby thing. ❤️

And yes… she’s still ridiculously cute!

🐷 We’re about to have a LOT more little feet running around Reynolds Family Farms.

Both of our Kunekune girls are bred, and we’re expecting two litters of piglets within the next few weeks!

We just published a new blog about what we’re expecting, what happens after the piglets arrive, and how to follow along if you’ve been looking for Kunekune piglets here in Idaho.

Now comes the hard part… waiting to see how many babies we get and what they all look like. 😂

Why did we choose Kunekune pigs for our small family farm?

With young kids helping care for the animals, we wanted pigs that were friendly, manageable, good on pasture, and full of personality.

Kunekunes checked all the boxes.

They’re smaller than many traditional hog breeds, generally easier on the pasture, and ours have quickly become some of the kids’ favorite animals on the farm.

We currently have one boar and two sows, and we’re hoping to welcome our first litter of Kunekune piglets in the coming weeks. I have a feeling there won’t be any shortage of volunteers for piglet duty around here. 😂

Why Nigerian Dwarf goats?

When we started looking at adding goats to Reynolds Family Farms, I wanted a breed that would be a great fit for the kids, our property, and the kind of family farm we’re building here in Idaho.

After doing our homework, Nigerian Dwarf goats made a whole lot of sense.

They’re small, friendly, full of personality, and can be excellent family milk goats. Of course, Brave, Roxy, and Moxie have already shown us that “full of personality” might be an understatement. 😂

What does “pedigreed” actually mean when you’re looking for a Holland Lop? 🐰

It’s something we talk about quite a bit with our rabbits, but a pedigree is a lot more than a piece of paper with a bunch of names on it. It gives us information about the genetics, colors, structure, size, and history behind the rabbits we’re breeding.

We put together a new blog explaining why pedigree matters, what you can learn from one, and how we use that information when planning future pairings here at Reynolds Family Farms.

And the timing is pretty exciting around here because Bella Swan, one of our pedigreed Holland Lop does, is due with her first litter around July 25.

That’s TWO DAYS away. 👀🐰

So while we’re talking about pedigrees and future generations, we’re also checking Bella about 854 times a day waiting for the newest generation to actually show up. 😂
