✨ Faculty Spotlight ✨

Meet Dr. Candis Scallan, Associate Professor of Agricultural Education at Stephen F. Austin State University!

With nearly 30 years of experience in agricultural education, Dr. Scallan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the SFA Department of Agriculture. She earned her B.S. in Agriculture from Sam Houston State University, a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Communications and Education from Texas Tech University.

Before joining SFA, Dr. Scallan spent 16 years as a secondary Agricultural Science teacher, served as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech University, and was an Assistant Professor at Washington State University. At SFA, she teaches agriculture and Agricultural Education courses, graduate classes, and supervises clinical teachers working in secondary agriculture classrooms.

Her passion for agricultural education began with her own high school agriculture program and FFA chapter. Her favorite part of teaching is watching students discover their potential and grow into professionals. From internship opportunities and interviews to celebrating new job offers, she loves being part of students' journey! Her advice to students: Get involved! Join department clubs, build relationships, gain work experience, manage your time, and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Her research interests include SAE in agricultural education and student and teacher recruitment and retention. Outside the classroom, Dr. Scallan serves as Secretary of the Agricultural Consortium of Texas and is involved with the Texas FFA Alumni Council. She has also served on the Texas FFA Board of Directors and the National FFA SAE for All Advisory Committee.

We are so lucky to have Dr. Scallan in the SFA Department of Agriculture as she celebrates the start of her 10th year with us!
