School of Social Work Celebrates Advocacy Day in Austin

On March 22, 2024, students from the SFA School of Social Work participated in the Social Work Advocacy Day (SWAD) 2024 event held at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. The SWAD event was organized by the National Association of Social Workers - Texas Chapter (NASW-TX) and this year’s theme was “Sticking Around for a Stronger Texas!”.

A group of more than 25 students and faculty members from the SFA School of Social Work took part in various activities including interviews with legislators, interactive advocacy workshops, and a grand rally alongside fellow social work students from across Texas. Moreover, the SFA students had an exclusive meeting with Chase Bearden, the Executive Director of the Coalition for Texans with Disabilities.

Coordinated and attended by Ms. Kristin Bailey-Wallace, Dr. James Morris, and Dr. Mohammad Mostafiz Khan, Assistant Professors of Social Work, this event underscores social work’s commitment to empowerment and social justice.
