We'd like to give a shout out to one of our students: Vincent Conklin!

Vincent is a senior Forestry major with a concentration in Human Dimensions in Natural Resources. He currently works as a saltwater fishing instructor at Gulf Shores Pier with Alabama State Park Division and has received amazing compliments from families and students! Take a look at what one parent had to say:

"I just wanted to reach out and brag on one of your employees at the Gulf Shores pier. I signed my 7-year-old son up for angler academy as it was our first time saltwater fishing. (Which is an amazing class, and I am thankful you guys provide it) Vincent Conklin was our instructor and was amazing! He was patient and kind. Took his time with each student but also took extra time with my son. In fact, from start to finish, we had nothing but wonderful interactions with your pier employees. We’re excited to introduce our Texarkana district, serving Northeast Texas and Southwestern Arkansas, an area known for its long history of logging, forest management, and numerous recreational opportunities in "The Natural State.”

Austin Morrison serves as District Manager, leading a team of four foresters/technicians and an administrative assistant. Together, this dedicated group manages over 200,000 acres, supporting a wide range of landowners, from small family farms to large privately held properties.

There’s a moment on a good tour when people stop talking and start looking.

That happened yesterday.

Mary Karen O’Neil, one of our interns from Stephen F. Austin State University, led her first tour at Caddo Mounds. She brought a fresh perspective, connecting the plants and animals of this place to how people lived here.

You could see it click. The landscape started to make more sense.

That’s what a good guide does.

One of our faculty members, Dr. Unger, is headed to Idaho to continue research on forest recovery following a major wildfire two years ago. Using drone technology, this project will help document and better understand the impacts of wildfire on forest ecosystems over time.

ATCFA visits the Netherlands!🇧🇶

SFA Forestry, Environmental Science, and Horticulture students spent 2 weeks in the Netherlands, learning how the Dutch address natural resource issues and what is involved in their flower industry, all while immersing themselves in Dutch culture and history.

Staying in four different cities, using trains and bikes to visit various sites, and talking to professionals and locals gave these Lumberjacks a chance to connect their East Texas education to a global perspective. We even provided one of our hosts and her daughters with ATCOFA polo shirts! Plans are already in place to return in 2027.
