Getting close to launch date!

Down to the little details. Our brass cabin lamps were tarnished and pitted, so ugly that I was going to buy new ones. I tried every metal polish I could find, and nothing worked. Then I tried vinegar, the strong stuff you get at the hardware store. That did the trick. Now they look new.

Launch day is getting closer!

Systems are almost done. Exterior finish work is almost done. Just need to paint the boot stripe and bottom. A fresh coat on the deck. Install the grab rails, vents, etc. A bit more interior finish work to do. A coat of paint on the mast. Another two weeks should do it.

One of the joys of working on a wooden boat is the use of traditional tools and natural materials. Traditional paint, varnish, glue, bedding compound, etc. are pleasant and easy to work with. They smell good and are basically non-toxic. They're durable and look good.

There are a few exceptions. Modern polymer technology has produced some great products. One of them is linear polyurethane paint. It's what they use to paint jet airplanes. It lasts from five to ten times longer than regular oil or water base paint. It resists fading, staining, scratching and will look brand new for years. The problem is that it's extremely toxic and requires a steep learning curve to be able to apply it and get a decent finish. The stuff I use is called Awlgrip. It's a compound that requires the mixing of three ingredients, each of which is toxic and when combined is even more toxic. To get around environmental and safety laws, Awlgrip is sold for "professional use only." You won't find it or any similar products at your local paint store or big box store.

One of the places I use it is on the cabin sides. My first application last week did not come out well. So I sanded most of it off and redid it. The pics show my successful second attempt. One more coat should do it.
