Did you know that a house can be legally declared “haunted” by a court of law?

In the famous real estate lawsuit Stambovsky v. Ackley (1991), a seller spent years boasting to local newspapers and tour groups that her Victorian home was haunted by poltergeists. When an out-of-town buyer went under contract with zero knowledge of the spirits, he sued to get his deposit back.

The New York Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled that because the seller had publicly promoted the apparitions, she could not deny their existence in court—declaring the property “haunted as a matter of law.” The buyer was granted rescission and got his deposit back!
