Today marks 12 years since I was awarded my black belt from kurtpellegrino
Looking back, I realize the black belt wasn’t the destination it was the beginning of a much greater responsibility. It’s been 12 years of continuing to learn, continuing to fail, continuing to grow, and doing my best to pass those lessons on to others.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the belt itself. It’s the academy we’ve built, the community we’ve created, and the opportunity to watch so many students change their lives through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Seeing kids walk through our doors shy and unsure of themselves, then grow into confident, respectful, resilient young people has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Watching adults accomplish things they never thought possible on and off the mats is just as rewarding.
None of this happens alone. I’m incredibly grateful to my professors, training partners, teammates, students, my family, and everyone who has trusted me over the years. You’ve all played a part in this journey and have made me a better instructor, teammate, and person.
Twelve years later, I still consider myself a student first. There’s always more to learn, more to improve, and more people to help along the way.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of these first 12 years. I’m excited to see what the next chapter brings.
“A black belt is not someone who has mastered jiu jitsu. It’s someone who has never stopped learning.”
Here’s to many more years on the mats.
