I need to have surgery on my left hand again. Though this sounds like bad news, it is actually good news, since the doctor expects good results. Surgery has been set for May 1st. Recovery will take a minimum of 3 months, so I have decided to schedule it as soon as possible. If all goes well, I should be able to start playing in August. Though, it could take longer.
I have been playing in pain for several years and cortisone shots have helped, but in the last couple of years the shots have not been working consistently. There have been times when I am playing that my hand feels like it wants to stop working, which can be stressful. Recently, the trigger finger symptoms have caused me to momentarily stop and bend my finger back to a useful position with my right hand.
The surgery involves two pins in my second thumb joint, rebuilding the lower joint, and two incisions in my index finger to relieve the “trigger finger.”
I love to play and teach. Sharing what I have learned and watching my students progress gives me great pleasure. It is possible that I could teach some private lessons over the summer without playing any guitar at all. I have thought about this, observed myself in lessons, and realized that sometimes I hardly play. Much of what I do is guiding, directing, and encouraging, not playing. With this said, I will be taking the entire month of May off and will gauge my ability to teach as summer progresses. I will be back as soon as it makes sense! Thank you for your prayers and support!
