Fossils of the Grand Strand in beautiful South Carolina

When I first saw this, I had to look twice!
Very creative sculpture of what looks like a Great White (but obviously a "sand" shark ) on the edge of the surf in Garden City.

This 6-inch-long fossilized claw belonged to a Giant Ground Sloth. These massive animals stood more than 15 feet tall, weighed around 3 tons, and lived in the Americas until they went extinct around 10,000 years ago. They were herbivores, so they used their formidable claws to grab tree branches, strip leaves off plants, and defend themselves from predators. If you’d like to learn more about fossils and shells in South Carolina then mark your calendars for the Horry County Museum Fossil and Shell Show on Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM!
