Leadership Grand Strand LGS is a 10-month leadership development program sponsored by Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

Leadership Grand Strand's curriculum provides broad-based leadership perspectives to familiarize participants with the Grand Strand's needs, opportunities and resources. The course, which traditionally begins with a retreat in September and culminates with graduation in May, explores topics such as historical aspects of the Grand Strand, tourism and economic development, education and law enforcement, human services, government and politics, and the arts. During the full-day sessions scheduled each month, participants work together with local leaders to expand their network of contacts and resources, to increases their breadth of knowledge about the community, and to develop leadership skills. The curriculum also includes community assignments that are related to each month's topic, challenging the participants to explore current issues first-hand. Leadership Grand Strand Objectives

1.Develop informed, trained and committed leaders who understand the issues and needs or our community.

2.Create the opportunity for leaders to meet, establish rapport, and maintain ongoing professional relationships.

3.Ensure that participants involve themselves in greater roles in our community through volunteerism in service and civic organizations, serving on appointed boards and running for local elected offices.

4.Create the opportunity for future leaders to continue to identify and study local issues.

5.Enhance the skills necessary to become effective leaders of the community.

What’s your SELF profile?

In Leadership Grand Strand’s September session, the class spent time learning more about themselves and how they work with others through their SELF profiles.

Drs. Dan and Heather Hoppe of Hop2it Consulting led the class through the SELF personality styles, helping participants better understand their own tendencies and recognize how different personalities communicate, collaborate and approach situations.

For emerging and established leaders alike, understanding those differences can help build stronger teams and better working relationships.

A special day of service, connection and community. 💙

Leadership Grand Strand alumni and members of the current class volunteered with GS Miracle Leagues, supporting athletes and sharing in a day filled with plenty of smiles and encouragement.

Experiences like this are an important part of community leadership. They give leaders a chance to connect with people outside their everyday circles, better understand the community they serve, and see firsthand the organizations making a difference across the Grand Strand.

The September Leadership Grand Strand session continued with a stop at Broadway at the Beach, giving the class a closer look at one of the Myrtle Beach area’s most well-known destinations.

The class learned about the property's history, toured the complex and heard more about how Broadway at the Beach has grown and evolved over the years.

Of course, there was a little magic along the way. Charles Bach Wonders treated the class to a short performance and a few magic tricks. It was an entertaining way to experience one of the many attractions that call Broadway at the Beach home.

More than baseball. ⚾

Leadership Grand Strand’s September session included a behind-the-scenes tour of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ stadium and its new Diamond multiuse space.

President Ryan Moore, General Manager Kristin Call and Assistant General Manager Ryan Cannella gave the class an inside look at how Minor League Baseball works, from the team’s role in the player development system to the business of operating a club and facility.

The conversation also went beyond game day. The class learned how the Pelicans approach their role in the community and how facility upgrades have created new ways to bring people together. With spaces that can host meetings, group outings and special events, the ballpark is becoming an even more versatile community asset.

Thank you for the tour, the conversation and a great look at what happens both on and off the field.

Leadership Grand Strand believes that strong leaders should have opportunities to grow, connect and lead.

Scholarship opportunities are available for the upcoming class through three different awards:

• The Bill Pritchard Scholarship, named in honor of the program’s founder
• The Bennie J. Swans Jr. Scholarship, awarded to an applicant from an underrepresented group
• The Diana D. Greene Scholarship, named in honor of the former executive director and awarded to an applicant working in the nonprofit sector

Scholarship assistance is not guaranteed, but applicants are encouraged to apply and share how Leadership Grand Strand could impact their personal and professional journey.

Applications for the next class are open now through June 15.
