Our sympathies go out to the family and the many, many friends of Don Anderson, a fixture in the Mustang community and 1990 inductee into the Mustang Hall of Fame.

Don Anderson longtime subscriber and friend of the Mustang Times has passed away.

Obituary: Donald Calvin Anderson, 93, of Mustang, died peacefully at home on August 17, 2026, surrounded by his wife and sons.

Don was born to Calvin and Jo Dorcas Anderson on January 26, 1933, in a cabin on his grandfather’s farm in Elmore City, Oklahoma. Don had two older brothers, Jack and Ronald (who died at age 3), an older sister Mickey, and baby sister “Cookie.” During the depression, the family moved to Moore, Oklahoma. Don always loved going to school at Moore and treasured his memories there. Early on, he worked in the cafeteria, played basketball, and made lifelong friends in Melvin Kyslea and AJ Hickman. Upon graduation from Moore, Don attended Central State College in Edmond. He left college to join the United States Air Force. He was trained as a radio operator, tried out for the AF baseball team, and became the team’s catcher for 3 seasons. During his years of service, he toured Europe and purchased a beloved 1954 red MG.

On returning home after his 4 years in the USAF, Don continued pursuing his Bachelor of Education degree as well as pursuing the beautiful lady who would become his wife. Don and Charlene married in 1959, and the couple moved to Mustang. They found wonderful and welcoming people there and have cherished their place in the community ever since. Their family grew quickly: David, Mike, Joe, and Patrick completed a wonderful family of 6. Don spent decades teaching, coaching girls’ basketball, and serving as principal and assistant superintendent during his career in education at the schools of Nowata, Crooked Oak, Mustang, Putnam City, and Western Heights. Upon retirement, Don became a realtor and land developer. He was instrumental in the development of Mustang and its citizen leadership. Don loved to travel, study history, support his family, and follow OU football. He leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to his community.

His four sons were his pride and joy, and they still live nearby. All the members of their families are so very precious to Don and Charlene. Don is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Charlene; sister Juanice Jo “Cookie” Hailey; his sons David (wife Debby), Mike, Joe, and Patrick, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and extended loving family.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 21 at 10am at First Baptist Church, Mustang. Friends and family are welcome at the visitation at McNeil’s funeral home on Thursday, August 20 from 1-8pm, and the family will greet visitors from 5-7pm.
