Big Lesson Day 5!

Friday we worked hard to wrap up our week! We created our final project of the week and they all turned out so good! It was a lot of hard work but it paid off!

After lunch, we waited for our special guests to show up. Thank you so much to everyone who was able to join us to celebrate our week! We had an amazing turn out!

This week is always a highlight of our year, and I know I have shared this already, but it really does show the kids they can do such high quality work and work through things are are extremely difficult with their learning. The bar is set high, but they all can and do achieve after getting their hands on their own learning! I am so proud of this group!

(Bonus photos included from the week from Ms. Sandy’s phone!)

Big Lesson Day 4!

Thursday brought us on yet another adventure and a new museum site! Today we walked down to the Depression Era House where the student explored family life during the depression. From chores, to sharing a house with multiple families, to the games and other forms of entertainment used, we learned so much!
We also spent time digging into what the life of a kid was like. We participated in many chores that kids would have had including sorting coal, tending a garden, beating rugs, sweeping and more. We also learned that many kids had to have jobs and shad to work in factories due to having smaller hands and could fix things adults couldn’t due to size.
We ended the day participating in school lessons from the past. This reminded us a lot of our trip to Maple Ridge and it was fun to make the connection to a trip we already took this year!

Big Lesson Day 3!

On Wednesday, we continued learning about the lumbering industry! We did some really hard math to calculate how many board feet we could get out of different size logs. This was a challenge but the kids showed that they can do hard things if they work together! We also made our own log markings for our own lumber companies!

After lunch we took a walking tour of Downtown Muskegon! We talked about all the amazing things that Mr. Hackley gave to our community and how the downtown area has changed over the years! Many students found it amazing that there used to be a mall where the streets now are!

Big Lesson Day 2!

Day 2 started with learning about lumbering and how important that was for the Muskegon Area. We learned about the lives of lumberman and the tools that they used to do many of the jobs they did! We thought it was crazy that they ate in silence so they could focus on eating then get back to their work!

After lunch we headed over to the Heritage Museum where we learned all about the Muskegon community over the years including many important businesses here in town! We talked about community resources that are important that we would like to see in our imaginary towns we created!

Big Lesson Day 1!

On day 1, we had a behind the scenes tour of the museum and met so many of their staff. We talked about their careers and what jobs in a museum we may want one day when we grow up. We also explored the Hackley and Hume Houses and learned all about Mr. Hackley and Mr. Hume and their families. We thought their houses were fancy and loved the lights and the stained glass!

Week 6.
It was rainy much of the week but these kids don’t mind a little water and they sure won’t let it ruin their recess!

If it’s safe to do so, we are heading outside always!

Inside we had a lot of fun working together and collaborating during many different activities!

A few days late… but we celebrated Darin’s 8th birthday last week! Happy birthday, Darin!
