Students in Mrs. Gaydos’s 4th grade ELA classes concluded Unit 1: Personal Narratives with a chocolate milk and Candyland celebration! A significant portion of the unit involved reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret, which details Peg’s battle with polio as a young girl. The classes learned that the popular board game, Candyland, was invented in 1949 by Eleanor Abbott, a schoolteacher recovering from polio, to entertain children in the hospital during the polio epidemic. Chocolate milk, or rather a chocolate milkshake, was the turning point in our story for Peg during her Polio battle. It was a great day filled with learning and laughter! Thank you to our local fire departments for a fantastic presentation about fire safety today! 🔥 They do an exceptional job teaching our students the importance of fire safety and to not be afraid of the firefighters when they’re in their gear! A few students were selected to demonstrate how to properly STOP, DROP and ROLL. The kindergartners got an up close look at the trucks! Everyone, be sure to check your smoke alarms and let us know if you do not have one. 🚨 Canon-McMillan School District drtaranto_cm Dr. Abbondanza North Strabane Township Fire Department Cecil Township Fire Department Canonsburg VFD

🍎 Last week, kindergartners in Mrs. Pierce’s classes learned about fiction and nonfiction as they explored books about apples. They ended the week with apple tasting in class! They incorporated what they are studying in math by voting on their favorite apples, and comparing the number of votes each received. Mrs. Pierce’s AM class had the greatest number of votes for red honey crisps, and her PM class chose the golden delicious. Poor Granny Smith received the fewest votes in both classes (and that’s Mrs. Pierce’s favorite). 🍏 Canon-McMillan School District drtaranto_cm Dr. Abbondanza

The students in Mrs. Ward’s 3rd Grade Social Studies class created a 3-D model of Earth out of balloons. It was a great hands-on activity that gave the students the opportunity to practice identifying the Equator, Prime Meridian, 4 hemispheres, 7 continents and 5 oceans. Our classroom may be small, but our learning took us around the world! Canon-McMillan School District drtaranto_cm Dr. Abbondanza
