20 Ways to Prepare for Potential El Niño Impacts
Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent overflow and foundation damage.
Inspect your roof for leaks or loose materials and repair issues before storms.
Clear storm drains and drainage channels to reduce neighborhood flooding.
Trim trees and remove dead branches to prevent wind‑related damage.
Keep sandbags on hand if your property has flooded before; supplies may be limited during storms.
Review flood insurance; standard homeowners’ policies don’t cover flood damage, and new policies take 30 days to activate.
Assemble an emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and pet supplies.
Protect important documents in waterproof containers or secure digital storage.

Plan alternate travel routes in case roads close due to flooding or debris.
Never drive through flooded roads—Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
