🌱 Spring Grass & Laminitis: What Horse Owners Should Know

Spring pasture can be risky for certain horses – especially those over 10, easy keepers, or prone to weight gain. Lush grass contains high levels of sugars (fructans) that can trigger laminitis (founder), a painful and potentially life-threatening inflammation inside the hoof.

Laminitis reduces blood flow to the hoof’s sensitive tissues, which can lead to separation of the hoof wall, rotation of the coffin bone, and severe pain. In serious cases, it can become life-threatening.

⚠️ Common risk factors include:
• Grazing on rich spring grass
• Obesity or “cresty neck”
• Hormonal conditions (like Cushing’s)
• Grain overload or other metabolic stressors

🩺 Prevention is key:
Work with your veterinarian to create a management plan tailored to your horse. Careful pasture management, weight control, and monitoring are essential this time of year.

🚨 If you suspect laminitis, treat it as an emergency and call your vet's emergency phone line right away.
