LUNCH TIME LAB!

Announcing drop-in hours on Zoom for real-time guidance and hands-on help with your course accessibility questions.

Held two Wednesdays each month from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. during the fall semester. This informal workspace is open to help you fix accessibility error flags live.

Can’t make the scheduled time? No problem! You can easily schedule a 1-on-1 appointment to get personalized support whenever it fits your calendar.

What to Expect:

Flexible attendance: Pop in for a quick question at your convenience.

Hands-on troubleshooting: Get direct support resolving specific accessibility errors.

Alternative scheduling: Book a private follow-up session if your schedule conflicts with the drop-in windows.

Our second session of CANVAS ACCESSIBILITY, SIMPLIFIED: MASTERING THE CORE FOUR (STRUCTURE, MEDIA, LINKS & TABLES) starts at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon!

You know accessibility matters in your courses, but where should you start?

As you build courses with accessibility in mind, you can implement key practices by keeping a few components in mind without feeling overwhelmed. Dr. Melony Shemberger, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications who is certified in several Canvas Certified Programs and assists other educators in Canvas course accessibility, will walk you through structure, images, media, links and tables — the primary accessibility areas to watch when designing your course in Canvas.

Objectives:

By the end of this session, you will be able to do the following:

*Structure content using heading levels, lists and color properly.
*Include alt-text for images and closed captioning for videos or transcripts for audio files.
*Use hyperlinks to minimize exposed URLs.
*Ensure tables are used for data, rather than layout.

Are you working to remediate your course content and unsure where to begin? Have you used an accessibility checker and felt uncertain about the flagged issues or which resources to consult next?

This session provides an overview of seven essential accessibility practices to help you identify barriers, address common issues, and enhance accessibility for all learners.

We will also review the course scanner and accessibility checker in Canvas and direct you to support resources to assist you in making your course content accessible.

By attending this session, you will gain a practical starting point and the tools needed to continue improving accessibility.

Objectives:

1. Describe the LATCHED accessibility areas and how each one affects student access.
2. Distinguish among issues identified by the Course Scanner and Rich Content Editor accessibility checker.
3. Select an appropriate support resource for a remediation task.
4. Analyze course material using the course scanner or accessibility checker.
5. Modify a single item in the course content to make it accessible.
