As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we would like to honor two historical figures who made a huge impact in the realm of language & communication.

Helen Keller
- first person to be deaf and blind to receive a bachelor’s degree.
- she wrote several articles for the Ladies Home Journal on the topic of blindness prevention. She also wrote a book in 1902 called The Story of My Life.
- Helen had to learn a number of ways to communicate and in total had five methods that helped her: touch-lip reading, braille, finger spelling, speech, and typing.

Virginia Woolf
- she started writing professionally as a contributor for The Times Literary Supplement in 1905.
- Virginia experimented with several literary tools with her book The Voyage Out After, including compelling and unusual narrative perspectives, dream-states, and free association prose.

Gwendolyn Brooks
- In 1950, she became the first African- American to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize.
- Her prize money funded poetry prizes, that she created, to encourage up and coming poets, especially children.
- Brooks loved doing nice things for other people even though she did not live a lavish lifestyle herself.

Langston Hughes
- He became the first African-American writer in America to make a profession in writing.
- Through writing, he considered racism and strategically used children’s books to teach equality. He also mentioned such issues in his newspaper column, books, and poetry.
