An Off-Grid, EV, Solar Charging Station at SIU Automotive. The Sustainability Office at SIU helped fund this project through their "Green Fund" grant. This grant supports sustainability efforts on campus and in the community. It's open to students, faculty, and staff to apply. In fact, the deadline for this year's submissions is coming up on March 23rd.

Last year, we applied and were awarded a grant to develop the appropriately named "SIU Solar Port." The project was rewarding and was a great learning experience. The solar port has 6600 watts of output, uses a degraded Nissan Leaf battery as backup power, and can provide over 165 miles of charge (in winter) on a sunny day for a vehicle that consumes 300 wh per mile. We use it to charge our program vehicles, which include the following:

12 - Nissan Leafs
1 - Tesla Model S
1 - Tesla Model 3
1 - Ford Mach
1 - Chevrolet Volt

Anyone who comes to the TEC is welcome to use the charger as well.

Special thanks to the Green Fund and the School of Automotive for supporting this project!
