Yesterday we had the opportunity to participate in North Carolina Local News Day, and it was a great reminder of how valuable our local newspaper is in the classroom at the Bridge Academy.

Local news is more than just headlines. It is a powerful learning tool that connects students to their community and helps build real world skills.

In our ESL classes, the newspaper is used to support civics education by helping students learn about local government, community events, and issues that affect the area where they live and work. Reading local news helps students practice English while also understanding how their community functions.

In Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, articles are often used for reading comprehension and life skills practice. Students work on identifying key information, discussing current events, and building vocabulary while learning about topics that impact daily life.

For our Adult Secondary Education (ASE) students, the newspaper is a practical resource for the future. Students are encouraged to explore job postings, workforce trends, and local opportunities, helping them connect their education to real employment possibilities.
