NC Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Center

NC Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Center We Grow North Carolina through Education and Research. A&T State University, and the U.S.

Our programs and partnerships are focused on agriculture and food, health and nutrition, 4-H youth development, and digital skills education. Welcome to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, the largest outreach program at North Carolina State University. Based in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, we reach millions of North Carolina citizens each year through local centers

in the state’s 100 counties and with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Cooperative Extension is a partnership that began here in 1914 when county, state and federal governments agreed that by joining together they could provide all citizens with access to the wealth of knowledge generated by public universities. Today that partnership includes county governments working to solve local problems, a national network of land-grant universities including NC State and N.C. Department of Agriculture working together, we recognize that we achieve much more than we can alone. Nationally, NC Cooperative Extension provides educational programming in five key areas:
sustaining agriculture and forestry
protecting the environment
maintaining viable communities
developing responsible youth
developing strong, healthy and safe families

Great Program!!!

After the monthly meeting, some Cherokee County residents joined us to learn about pollinators in your landscape, in particular bees. This was a great presentation by Matthew VanHorn, a Murphy native, President of the Cherokee County Beekeepers Association and also a Master Gardener Volunteer. Thanks for a great presentation!

We looked at the free resource www.familysearch.org . This provides online access to an extensive collection of records. The Nantahala Regional Library also has genealogy systems available for the public at their computer labs, including tools which are paid subscriptions.

The beautiful perennial garden created and maintained by the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers Cherokee County is still going strong with flowers. Check it out on the Murphy Riverwalk across the pedestrian bridge from Konehete Veterans Park.

Let the Pony Express take your Mountain State Fair items for you!

Instead of requiring individual exhibitors to make the long drive to the fairgrounds before and after the fair, a dedicated Pony Express route sweeps through participating county extension offices. The express van collects non-perishable competition entries, safely hauls them to Fletcher for judging and display, and returns them to the local county offices once the fair wraps up.

What is the Mountain State Fair Pony Express? The Pony Express is a free collaborative transport service provided by the N.C. Mountain State Fair in partnership with local N.C. Cooperative Extension…
